Following the Government’s announcement of a lockdown to limit the spread of Covid-19, we’ve put together some FAQ’s as to why it’s still important to protect your pride and joy with essential insurance in place.

Q: Should I still insure my motor vehicle while I am unable to use the vehicle?

A: Motor insurance, which includes motorhomes remains vital. Unless the vehicle or motorhome is kept off the road and is declared as SORN with the DVLA, it must be insured. If a vehicle or motorhome is not declared as SORN with the DVLA and does not have insurance, you as the owner could receive a fixed penalty of £100, have your vehicle or motorhome wheel-clamped, impounded or destroyed, or face a court prosecution, with a possible maximum fine of £1,000.

Q: Do I need to insure my vehicle if it is declared SORN?

A: Even if your vehicle or motorhome is declared SORN, motor insurance is still very important. Even when unused and parked in a garage while you keep safe from Covid-19, vehicles or motorhomes can be damaged by fire or by accident and they can be targeted by criminals. Without insurance, there is no cover for malicious damage should your vehicle or motorhome get keyed on your driveway, no cover for accidental damage following a hit and run, no theft cover and even if a vehicle or motorhome is locked away in a garage there would be no cover if you accidentally drop a tin of paint on the vehicle or motorhome. These are just a few examples and there are many more as to why insurance is important even when declared off-road.

Q: My mileage will be lower now as I am not able to use the vehicle. What shall I do?

A: You should call our team to discuss if your declared mileage is still accurate or whether you need to reduce it.

Q: Do I need to insure my touring caravan?

A: Although not a legal requirement, insurance for touring caravans still offers many benefits. Whether you store your caravan at home or at a storage site, whilst insured you will still be covered for loss or damage caused by extreme weather, accidental damage, malicious damage and theft. Many of the examples of cover remaining valuable to those with a motor vehicle will also apply to those with a caravan.

Q: Do I need to insure my static caravan?

A: Static caravan insurance provides peace of mind when you are unable to check on your holiday home. Cover remains in place for all key perils such as fire, theft, storm, and vandalism. As caravan parks are now closed, they become more tempting for opportunistic thieves. With insurance cover, you can be safe in the knowledge that if the worst happens, you have cover in place, so as soon as you are able to use your caravan again, you can do so.

Q: Do I still need to insure my home?

A: With a large majority of us spending more time at home, the risk of accidents around the home may be higher, and the glare of extra computer monitors may prove tempting for passing thieves. Also, the importance of being able to sort out any problems as quickly as possible is essential. Home and park home insurance are therefore as vital as ever and you should carefully consider whether you can be without it.

The correct cover in place stops you from being left with large, unexpected bills to fix or replace your property. Even in these times, insurance offers valuable protection and peace of mind.
